Resolving SCARM Installation Issues

Don’t know what you have done, but in 3d its terribly slow. In 2d I’m missing the arrows on tracks and I can’t connect pieces together. For some reason I’m missing a piece, but I can’t repair it because I can’t choose an arrow.
Found the problem with the missing arrows. For some reason a piece of track was linked to an other layer. I had that particular layer switched off, so the piece of track also vanished from the actual layer. Because its there, but not shown, the arrows are also not there, because there is a track piece connected to it.
However, my comment on the 3d is to stay.
There are no changes in the 3D viewer between 0.9.28 and 0.9.29. It should be something on your layout (i.e. many fir-trees) or some changes in the 3D settings either in SCARM or in graphics driver.
It was set to the highest, did play with optimum, but it shows the depot as if it wasn’t used for years (terrain is set to green (standard?), the depot has a layer in grey, with this setting you see lots of green coming through the grey layer). Set it to good, on below the highest possible, complete grey layer of the depot not shown or displayed in wrong color. I’m back to the highest, guess I’m on the very edge of what my system can do with a P3 795Mhz processor with 512Mb memory. I had just put in a few more trees on the already 234 drawn, on my layout it don’t looks even close to what should be a dense forest. Coffee does taste very good when I’ve made it
. For the rest of it, compliments for your efforts in giving us this nice planning tool.
You need to adjust the gray polygon, i.e. increase height to set above the terrain mesh otherwise the green “waves” will be seen through. The mesh grid depends on the quality setting in 3D settings, so you need to find the optimum for your layout. A few more or less trees may make the difference on a P3 machine, but in general, SCARM does not like dense forests, especially when fir-trees are used.
I have 204 fir trees on the track and in a forest. When you see it you won’t believe that it add up to 204. Its now getting a little slow, as said before, coffee does taste good
.
For 1:29 would you consider adding USA trains track geometry or is it not any different than Aristocraft?
In 1:22.5 Thiel track carried by Train-Li has many track geometries as well. Mutliple radius curves, three way and double slip would be nice to have.
Overall it has made my planning wonderful, thank you!
Hello Marylin,
Thiel tracks are scheduled for some of the next versions of SCARM.
About USA trains in 1:29 – please, provide some link to check them and their parameters.
Thank you!
Here is a link to the USA Trains 1:29 track system. A lot is the same as Aristo but there are some differences I believe

With Ctrl-A you select everything. Clear. If you don’t want a piece you can deselect that piece by clicking on it and holding down the Ctrl and Shift button at the same time. This works if you selected a wrong piece by accident and don’t want to select lots of pieces again in case you can’t use Ctrl-A.
So I use layers for tracks on a certain level, buildings, trees, terrain etc. Now I want to copy all the buildings to a new plan, but buildings are complicated and some contains several items stacked on each other like a roof on a building to keep it simple. So Ctrl-A should do in this layer. However you get the baseboard as a free gift with it. And I don’t want that, so I tried Ctrl and Shift button, but for some unknown reason the basebord doesn’t react the same way as other items on the board. Is this a bug or something not thought off. If so, is it possible to build in the option of deselecting the basebord, so you can copy only the contains? If you did copy it with the basebord, then your basebord is overwritten with the past one.
I found the work around by deleting the basebord, Ctrl-A for select everything and copy that. Pasting in the new plan will give now everything but without the free gift of the basebord. Before you go to the other new plan you get the question of saving, the answer is NO. In this case the old plan or other plan is not altered and deleting the basebord is not saved.
Question on inclines..
I use N Kato Track. I noticed when using the double track it doesn’t make inclines between point a -b. like when using single track pieces.
For example the Helix tutorial you could not do it with double track. Is there plans to fix this?
Hello Mike,
This is a known issue with KATO double track sections. It will be fixed in some of the next versions of the program. As a workaround, use single tracks in that part of the layout to set the heights and then transfer these heights manually to each piece of the double track route.
I’ll come back on my first message. I have the problem that tracks are joining to other tracks if its over the join, even when that join was a complete one, so no open end. I have made new and adjust old helix systems, but with this version I have the trouble that tracks join to an upper layer or lower layer. So you think you have a correct helix and after a reload some tracks join to another track. This is true special with flex rail. I have erased the helix and rebuild it with new tracks, but no success. Any ideas?
If SCARM makes a join then there is a track with open end. It may be on invisible layer or there may be several tracks one above another that looks like single track. For the helices, you need to build them at once from bottom to top (or vice versa) as explained here How to create helix or here Creating Helix In SCARM – Part 1 – Using Sectional Tracks (VIDEO). Always use enter and exit helper tracks as first and last one to avoid joining conflicts. Editing of tracks in a helix which have not yet track heights set may lead to mismatches as SCARM connects overlapping track ends at the same heights by the order of their placement.
Still troubles with redesigning helix tracks. If you had edited a lower helix layer as last item, then it will stay on top in the design, even if the height is lower then the helix tracks below. Clicking on a track part which does connect to that hidden part of the helix won’t show that hidden part, the part with not the right height stays on top. Clicking on that wrong part in order to cut and past won’t work right if the heights do have decimals in the height notation, that works only with heights without decimals. Building the helix bottom up with the aid of layers could do the trick, but we have only 10 layers. To setup with this way I need 30 layers or so.
Another work around is with track colors, but then you have trouble in choosing just a few colors and all of that color if you want to reset heights or want to drag it to another position.
I have helix systems which are complicated and set on specific heights in order to get a decent slope. Starting all over again with that particular helix is actually not an option.
So, to overcome this there are several options for building in the program;
1) clicking on a joined part will reveal the connected part and on top, so you can delete, add, drag, drop etc.
2) the number of layers is going up to 32, 64, 128?, don’t know why the limit is set to just 10.
3) make a system that you can pick any track in the helix regardless position and height in the helix.
Regards,
Joop
Is it possible to put in the key combination ALT+Arrow keys for moving half the screen?
Would like to see a switch for the track color button where if the switch is truned on (selected) when a colored track section is selected, the existing track color in the catalog is highlighted. This would be a great assist when adding or modifying an existing section of colored track.
Now it is a guessing game to match the color wanted with the existing color.
TIA
Hi, any chance to get unitram from kato?
Hope we can have it soon, thank you.
Yes, there is a chance for KATO Unitram, however, there are several things that should be complete in the program code before they appear in SCARM, so I cannot promise that for the very next update, but may be later.
I just found SCARM yesterday. Today installed it on Linux Mint 17 + KDE with WINE 1.6.2 running on a Dell Optiplex 760 (dual core, 3GB RAM) with 2 monitors. It is working quite well in both the 2D track plan view and the 3D viewer. Performance is very good.
I have encountered a couple of glitches but no crashes thus far. For example, the fir trees in 3D have only trunks, no branches. Not a big deal. In time I will document these issues and communicate them to you.

down loads and installs but when trying to start it a box pops up and says. scarm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvience. run windows xp home
Hello John,
Not sure which version of SCARM you have, but if it is v.0.9.29, please update with v.0.9.31. If you still have a problem, read more information here: http://www.scarm.info/blog/problems-and-solutions/resolving-scarm-installation-issues/
i have updated and have the same issue
There could be many reasons for such error. Read also the comments here: http://www.scarm.info/blog/problems-and-solutions/resolving-scarm-installation-issues/
Is there any update on when we might see Kato Unittram track in SCARM?
Still working in that.
