Model Train Layouts & Track Plans

Home Metro-style HO Layout With A Subway Station

The layout is representing a metropolitan theme with tracks on two levels, featuring passenger train station on the upper level and subway station on the lower level. The plan is intended primarily for passenger traffic, but freight trains as well as switching/shunting operations in the central industrial area are also possible.

Description

Here is how the author describes his layout design:

"I adapted this layout from an old Marklin plan called "Anlage 10". It provides considerable track with a variety of routing options in a modest size. The stacked tracks save space to fit the plan on a 48" x 96" table with reasonably wide curves. The lower level track at the front represents a subway section with a station.

This version uses KATO HO UniTrack with no "cut-to-fit" pieces. It will need special wiring to manage the reverse loops. Easements are used as much as possible, meaning that a wider radius section precedes the main part of a long curve. Grades are 2.7% maximum.

A passenger train can run on a loop-to-loop circuit between the upper and lower stations while another train runs on an independent double-oval circuit. A single long-folded-dogbone route is also possible by using the crossovers. The station siding and yard tracks provide additional train capacity.

The switches are all accessible from the front of the layout. The back of the layout could be against a wall to save space, if provision is made for construction and maintenance access.

Most of the buildings and objects were submitted to the SCARM site by generous contributors, and I've added some custom-built items that can be copied to other plans.

If someone decides to actually build this plan, please share photos!
