Tip
If “Check for Updates” feature in older releases reports that there is no newer version of SCARM, download the installer directly from the website. The old release info file may be cached on your PC and it may need some time to expire. If the website also shows older version, press F5 key to refresh it.

This version comes with some new features, including improvements in the Tracks selection panel and Libraries menu, many new and updated track libraries, updated language translations and several important bugfixes.

Tracks selection panel

The Tracks selection panel now shows the obsolete parts in some track systems marked in dark red color. These are some old tracks in some of the libraries, which are stopped from production or are replaced with new item numbers i.e. due to improvements in the production process. These old tracks will be now easily distinguished in order not to be mixed with the same looking actual items. In example, here are shown two pairs of obsolete turnouts in the Tillig TT-scale Modell library:

The old tracks will be also marked with “OBSOLETE PART” label in the tooltip, in the Status bar (when such part is selected) and in the Parts list (in the Note field), however that will be valid only for such parts used in new projects, after this update.

If you start a new project using a track system which contains old parts and don’t want to use them in your track plan, you can hide each old item by right-clicking over its button and select “Hide” from the context menu.

Please, note that currently, only a few libraries are fully processed with old tracks in them marked as obsolete parts. If you know more, let us know and we will make the necessary updates in the next versions of SCARM.

Libraries menu

Over the years, SCARM’s libraries have grown in number and now the program supports more than 215 track systems in more than 30 different scales and gauges. As a result, the libraries selection menu is getting larger and the track systems are harder to be reached. In order to handle that, SCARM now offers the option for selecting only the required scales and to hide all other that are not necessary. To do that, go to “Tools” > “Settings” > “Tracks panel” and see the “Selected scales” list-box with all scales, included in the software:

In example, if you are modelling in N scale, uncheck all other scales and leave only the N scale checked in the list (scroll down the list-box to find N scale item and also to remove the other scales after it). In this way, you will see only N scale systems and will easily navigate in the menu. Further, you can also switch the sorting in “Libraries list sorting” field (in the right part of the same panel) and to see i.e. all the producers in N scale, or remove sorting and see all systems in N scale (including all scalable libraries) directly in the libraries selection menu, without navigating to the sub-menus.

MTS Train Controller

Note that you can now change the direction of the active loco using “D” key or stop it using the Spacebar. See more about how to operate the Train controller here: How to work with the Train controller

  1. Hi, Milen,

Congratulations on the SCARM 1.8.0 release !

I immediately attempted to install it, but for some reason I get an error when launching the installer. The Japanese message is: “Cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have permission to access it.

  2. Hello Toda,
I checked the installer on several PCs and it works fine for me.
The message seems to indicate a problem on the current PC or something related to the user rights. Please, check that the setup file is not blocked by Windows Defender or other AV software and also try installing with Admin rights (that is required by the installer).

  3. Sorry, the cause of the error when launching the installer was due to a virus scanning software called AVG Free. It seems that the installer binary was sent to AVG Quarantine Center without permission, and after forcibly removing AVG’s guard and reinstalling it again, Ver 1.8.0 was successfully installed. I deeply apologize for my inaccurate statement.

  4. I have finished fixing the new Japanese langdata files. After using it for a while and confirming that there are no problems, I will send it to you by e-mail soon :-) .

  5. Is there some way you can register you’re installer with Microsoft, it detects is as harmful on Windows 10 and I have to work around that.

Also, I wright some applications myself in Python, that is compiled and I also noticed AVG tags them as harmful and quarantines them. However, I run BitDefender AV on some of my PCs and it works fine. Also, I used to use a different Python compiler and it worked! I would look into your compiler and see if switching prevents the anti-virus warning too.
    Regards,
    Ted

  6. Hello,

i installed v1.8 on my new computer along with my license (on the accunt it says it’s a v1 license which i considered valid for v1.8) but after installing (with switched off firewall and antivirus) it still says unlicensed and when i try to uninstall the licence file it says, it’s outdated. I’m not really sure what’s going on, but as far i understood i have a valid licence which i now cannot use for activation… Any idea?

    Best regards,
    Máté

  7. Hello Mate,

That is explained in a note, on the bottom of the purchase confirmation e-mail which you received after buying of the license key. I will copy/paste it here:

Note: The license in this purchase will be valid and usable only on the PC where it is initially activated and downloaded. If you want to transfer the license to a new PC, you must first uninstall it from the old PC using “Help” > “Uninstall License(s)” menu command within the program and then follow the above procedure on the new PC.

Please, apply the solution provided in Q/A #8 here: Resolving License Activation and Installation Issues

  8. Hello,

oh i see. That’s quite sad, as that PC is already reinstalled and used by one of my colleagues. Is there any chance to initialize the licence centrally?

    Best regards,
    Máté

  9. First love the software easy to use.
    Feature requests.
Pressing Straight or Curve Flex-tracks automatically sets active flex track to current start point (Same type as last used if first use only time you get no active track)
Ability to create custom track (For those of us that hand lay track)
    Tool Box
Do not clear text boxes in Flex-tracks modelling and start point
Flex-Tracks modeling add at least one additional
    “L:__ +Straight” field
    “R:__ A:__ +Curve” field
Much better would be a list of flex segments to add then you highlight the segment and press the “Add” button example
    L: 5.1
    R:18 A:22.5
    R:18 A:-22.5
    L:32
Still even better would be the ability to customize a track library to include flex track segments as I find myself entering the same combinations over and over especially in fiddle and staging yards. (basically a script/markup system/language)
Last one ability to have favorite track lib for example I only use
Atlas: FlexWood,520,519,Bmp,560,561,562 and Shinoh: DCO it would be nice to have JUST those tracks (Plus a couple of custom Flex segments) in a lib. Even if its not customizable run time.

  10. hello Milen
Thank you very much for fixing the “roof bug”. Now it works great, even with my saved layouts from the last version!

  11. Sorry for replying to this post, but how do I start a new post. I have a question about using Layers, but cannot find the answer in the Blog, FAQs or Tutorials etc. I would appreciate some guidance as the best way to raise a question. Thanks. S

  12. I have just discovered your software yesterday. Experimented with the ‘free’ version last night. Purchased licenses this morning.
I love the software. You have done a fine job of it! I would love the ability to design my own locos and cars/wagons. Is this possibility on your radar? Thanks!

  13. Hello Jim,
    Thank you for your purchases.
Currently, there is no way for the users to design their own rolling stock, but I have this feature in my To-do list and it will appear in some future version of SCARM.

  14. Ok. That would be great. If you were to release a Loco/Car designer as an extension, I don’t know about others, but I would certainly purchase a license for it!

  15. Hi Milen,
I have been using SCRAM for some 4 years now and like the constant improvements you are making. One Q: Is there a way to make the SCRAM open on a specific monitor? I have dual monitors and whatever I do SCRAM always opens on the wrong one :-)

    Thanks and Regards
    Gan Murali

  16. HI, new user….love the program….however, grandkids keep telling me I need to get rid of the “lolipops” Any users have or are there updates for more realistic trees

  17. Hi. Just installed the 1.8 version onto my PC. Installed perfectly. A query. Had a look at the N scale layout plans. The all seem to have File: N/A? In the download area. Are these plans no longer supported or no longer available?
